“A powerful firsthand account of the devastating impact that Lyme can have on an entire family.”

—Nicole Bell, patient advocate, author of the best-selling memoir What Lurks in the Woods

“A reminder of the healing power of sharing stories—especially the challenging ones.”

—Lindsay Keys, writer, filmmaker, codirector of The Quiet Epidemic

“Rachel and her mother, Dorothy, take the reader on a journey from the depths of despair to a life regained.”

—Scott Forsgren, The Better Health Guy

About the memoir

When thirteen-year-old Rachel Leland fell in a soccer game, she had no idea that her life was about to change forever. A seemingly simple injury led to an outbreak of inexplicable, debilitating pain, leaving her bedridden and in need of a wheelchair. Refusing to believe doctors who claimed either that she was “faking it” or that nothing could be done, Rachel and her mother, Dorothy, set out on a quest for answers until they at last found the underlying cause—chronic Lyme disease.

As Rachel and her family were forced into a wildly different reality of new treatments and unsupportive school and healthcare systems, Rachel’s mental health deteriorated as well, landing the teenager in a psychiatric hospital.

Based on the journal Rachel kept during her years battling Lyme and depression, this raw memoir chronicles her journey to becoming the strong, healthy woman she is today. Interspersed with Dorothy’s insights, Finding Resilience is an unflinchingly honest and inspiring account of the struggles and triumphs they experienced together.

The absolute most insane health challenges have happened to me in 2017, but due to the intricacies and very odd nature of what I’ve had to deal with, it’s been easier to just not talk about it. I kept telling myself, “I’ll wait until it gets better—then I’ll explain it all.” But it’s a year later, and I’m not there yet. I keep getting asked by fellow Lyme and mold patients, “how are you doing now?” And so far I haven’t wanted to address that question, because I didn’t like the answer. But I’m done waiting. Here’s an update: Continue reading “I’m done waiting. Here’s an update.”
